ARNE JACOBSEN (DANISH, 1902, 1971) SIX HIGH BACK 'OXFORD' CHAIRS; DESIGNED 1965; CIRCA 1975 Tobacco leather upholstery, cast aluminium, chrome-plated steel Manufactured by Fritz Hansen Manufacturer's applied foil label to underside 'FH, MADE IN DENMARK, 7202, BY FRITZ HANSEN, DANISH FURNITURE CONTROL' 126cm high, 48cm wide, 57cm deep Literature: Arne Jacobsen, Thau and Vindum, 2022, pp. 523-524 Designed by Arne Jacobsen for the prestigious St Catherine's College at the University of Oxford, which opened in 1964, this high-backed chair was originally conceived with the seat and back formed from a single moulded plywood shell, ergonomically shaped to follow the natural curvature of the human spine. It was quickly dubbed the 'Professor' chair, as it was used at the High Table in the dining hall, reserved for the Fellows of the College. The tall back created a defined presence around the table and subtly emphasised the hierarchy between the Fellows and the students, who were seated on benches. The Oxford chair, launched by Fritz Hansen in 1965, is a further development of this design, now produced using modern materials. Condition Report: All with signs of age and use in a domestic setting and for the intended purpose, the leather to each has creasing and surface cracking however no deep cracks or splits have been noted, each swivelling on its support, the supports with some discolouration and pitting.
