Antoine Cartier

Fascinating illustrated edition of 11 plates from one of the foundational works of Viscount Antoine Cartier d’Aure, renowned French horseman, and it constitutes both a reasoned history of the art of horsemanship and a practical treatise intended to train the rider and perfect the horse - D’Aure begins by placing the riding of his era within a long historical evolution, examining the major transformations that have occurred since the 16th century and showing how dressage methods, the rider’s position, the use of aids, bits, saddles, and the various conceptions of the education of the horse have gradually changed - This historical perspective allows him to compare the teachings of the old masters with modern practices and to defend a conception of horsemanship based on experience, the observation of the horse and the pursuit of a true harmony between mount and rider - Antoine Cartier, Viscount d'Aure - Treatise on Horsemanship preceded by an overview of the diverse modifications and changes brought to horsemanship from the 16th century to our days, followed by an Appendix on the young horse - 1844 - A.
