Antique Ring with Sapphires and 1.05 ct Diamonds in Gold, c. 1900

Three high-quality old-cut diamonds form the centerpiece of this ring, which was crafted c. 1900. The larger center stone, weighing approximately 0.75 carats, is flanked by two smaller diamonds; between them, two natural deep-blue sapphires add striking pops of color. The diamonds are graded Top Wesselton, G color, and the center stone in particular displays a fantastic sparkle with very good clarity. Arranged in a dense, sparkling row across the finger, the five gemstones come together to form a balanced, rhythmically structured ring face. Discreet chatons set in 14-karat rose gold allow the stones to shine unimpeded. Stylistically, the ring follows in the tradition of the multi-stone row rings popular in the late 19th century. The interplay between the lively fire of the diamonds and the velvety, nocturnal depth of color of the sapphires is captivating. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, however, gemstones in the 19th century also held a widely understood symbolic meaning. In so-called “gem lore,” the language of gemstones, the sapphire was regarded as a symbol of fidelity, sincerity, and constancy, while the diamond embodied immortality. When combined, the two stones could therefore be interpreted as an eloquent declaration of enduring affection. The ring, which was likely crafted in Germany, came to us here in Berlin.
