A spring day in London at the turn of the last century: The first warm days attract crowds of walkers to the parks of England's metropolis. In Hyde Park, for example, the air is filled with the scent of flowers and blossoming trees. Chestnut and lime trees unfurl their first leaves and fresh greenery glows in the spring sunshine. As if this incomparable spring green were set in stone, the peridot shines in this piece of jewellery from that exciting time. Symmetrical tendrils of gold and pearls form a floral ornament to which an Antillean pearl is attached. The materials are typically British: colored gemstones, creamy white natural pearls and warm, shiny gold were among the most popular materials on the island at the turn of the 20th century. Green peridot was particularly fashionable at the time - after all, it was considered the favorite stone of the legendary last pharaoh Cleopatra. As the peridot mines on the Nile only became accessible to the English in those years, it is hardly surprising that this stone often appears in pieces of jewellery from the era. A pin on the back allows the piece to be worn as a brooch; a concealed, open pendant bail also allows it to be attached to a pearl or gold chain. A pretty piece of jewellery from late Victorian England.
