Antique Gold Bar Brooch with Pearls, c. 1910

“As is well known, pearls are today the magic word that makes the heart of every sophisticated woman beat faster, and to an ever-increasing degree, pearls are pushing the fiery red rubies, the sparkling emeralds, and even the dazzling diamonds into the background. […]” (Deutsche Goldschmiede-Zeitung, No. 45, 1910, p. 399). – What the authors of the Deutsche Goldschmiede-Zeitung correctly recognized was that c. 1910 there was a major trend for pearls that spanned all categories of jewellery. Brooches, earrings, necklaces, rings—all were set with pearls and were thus not only suitable for daytime wear but also exceptionally easy to coordinate. A typical piece of jewellery from that era is this gold bar brooch. A flower, whose pistil is formed from a particularly large blister pearl and whose petals are made of small natural pearls, takes center stage in the design. Extending from it is a twisted gold rod featuring prong settings that hold individually set cultured pearls. The brooch came to us from Celle.
