"When I hear the word Russia, I think of a great plain where it is twilight. I cannot imagine the sun shining there; it is always twilight, and in the distance there is a big city with lights in the windows, and somewhere in the twilight someone is singing or crying." These two poles, as so aptly described by Eduard von Keyserling in his 1917 novel Fürstinnen, are where our imagination wavers to this day when we think of the Russia of the late Tsarist Empire: on the one hand, the splendour and grandeur, and on the other, the melancholy of the vast landscape. This pair of earrings captures these moods in delicate twilight hues - created in and for the glittering lights of Moscow, for ballrooms and salons. The basic design is the classic dormeuse, as worn in the 1890s in particular: a select old-cut diamond on a golden leverback. Here, however, the design is additionally enlivened by fine pendants with knife-edge bars. Each bar is set with a rose diamond and another large gemstone, whose facets sparkle brilliantly when in motion: a natural, glowing pink sapphire in the center and another fine old-cut diamond on the outside. As the knife bars are so narrow when viewed from the front that they almost disappear, the gemstones almost appear to float. Despite the preciousness of the material, the result is a wonderfully light, elegant impression, as was particularly appreciated in the fin de siècle and was also sought to be achieved in dress fashion with pastel shades and the finest silk muslin. According to their hallmark, the earrings were made in Moscow between 1898 and 1908. We had the pink sapphires added in our workshop.
