Lightness was the ideal of the Belle Époque, the period between the late 19th century and the outbreak of the First World War. It was no longer just the aristocracy that celebrated glittering parties. The bourgeoisie, who had gained wealth and prestige through industrialization, now also had the purchasing power to indulge in glamour. Lively balls, foaming champagne coupes and elegant trips to the vibrant capitals characterize the image of that time. Last but not least, this feeling of joie de vivre and ease was also reflected in jewellery and fashion. The brooch presented here could hardly be any lighter, although it is richly set with no less than 11.80 ct of diamonds. Elegant bow ornaments - borrowed from the time of Marie Antoinette - and delicate knife wires support the sparkling stones. Some of them tell a story that goes beyond the production period of the brooch: they are designed in cuts that were used in the early 19th century and were probably taken from heirlooms. All of the diamonds are set in solid platinum, a particular luxury at the time: the precious metal was not only the most modern, but also the most expensive choice. The piece of jewellery was designed for the "grande toilette", the grand evening dress worn to a ball or a visit to the opera. Its shape reveals that it is a corsage ornament, also called stomacher, intended to be worn at the center of the low-cut neckline. The almost triangular design thus harmonized with the lines of the collarbones and the cut-out silk gown. The piece is magnificent, but also intended to flatter its wearer, emphasize her shapes and blend elegantly into the overall look. It communicated not only prestige and wealth, but also modern taste and a fine sense of style. The piece of jewellery is beautifully preserved. It comes with an independent gemological appraisal.
