Antique Dutch wall newspaper holder – Newspapers & Weeklies – Amsterdam School / Art Deco – circa 1920–1935 A particularly atmospheric Dutch wall holder for newspapers and weeklies, probably made in the years 1920–1935. A characteristic utilitarian object from the interwar period in which practicality and pronounced design beautifully come together. The tall, pointed rear panel and the two separate compartments have a strongly architectural form. The dark-finished profiles contrast nicely with the warm wood and emphasize the geometric lines. This styling aligns well with Dutch Amsterdam School and Art Deco interiors from the twenties and thirties. Similar Dutch wall holders with inscriptions such as Couranten, Weekbladen and Dagbladen are also dated circa 1920–1935 and categorized under Amsterdam School/Art Deco. Extra appealing are the two original-looking black-and-gold metal nameplates: COURANTEN WEEKBLADEN The word couranten is the historical Dutch term for newspapers and gives the object its authentic, early-20th-century appearance. Similar wooden Dutch wall holders with exactly this function and old inscriptions are described as newspaper and magazine holders from the first half of the 20th century. The two projecting compartments originally provided a fixed place for the daily newspaper and the weekly magazines. Condition The wall holder is in a beautiful authentic used condition, appropriate for age and use. There are normal signs of aging and wear visible, including local scratches, wear to the wood and the dark finish, and wear marks on the metal nameplates. These signs fit the age and contribute to the original character. An attractive and increasingly hard-to-find piece of Dutch interior history, with a pronounced 20s/30s aura and wonderful original inscriptions.
