Unification of our country, the unity of our people, and the unity of our various nationalities — these are the fundamental guarantees for the secure triumph of our cause. Publisher: People’s Art Editions (Renmin Meishu Chubanshe), Beijing, February 1968. The manifesto is clearly divided into two large geometric blocks, a graphic arrangement typical of late 1960s Chinese propaganda designed to be legible even from a great distance: - The Upper Quadrant (The Photograph): Mao Zedong is depicted on the balcony of the Tiananmen Gate. The low-angle shot (looking up) dignifies and elevates the leader’s figure, while the hazy golden sky in the background confers an almost sacred aura, in line with the “Red Sun” iconography spread during the period. The gesture of the applause creates a symbolic reversal: it is not only the masses who acclaim the leader, but the leader himself who validates and applauds the actions of the Red Guards and the proletariat gathered in the plaza below. - The Lower Quadrant (The Text Block): The text, printed in stark white against a bright red background, serves as a solid ideological pedestal for the photo above. The choice of typeface is standardized and imposing, only broken at the bottom by the gold-ink calligraphic reproduction of Mao Zedong’s autograph. The signature serves not only as a seal of authenticity, but acts as a powerful emotional and devotional element for the observer of the era. From a communicative and political standpoint, this poster is a masterful example of integrated messaging. It does not invent a complex or abstract iconography, but relies on three elements immediately recognizable to the Chinese citizen of 1968: the familiar face of the Great Helmsman in military uniform, embodying stability and leadership; the textual quotation, memorized by millions as it is part of the daily readings of the Little Red Book; the color red, which saturates the visual space and symbolizes revolutionary ardor, the blood of martyrs, and the triumph of communism. The work succeeds in balancing documentary photography (which captures a real moment of the great parades in Beijing) with the conceptual abstraction of the quotation on patriotic destiny. Although the primary objective was political conditioning and the consolidation of the personality cult, the clean layout and chromatic balance make it today one of the most representative and studied pieces of editorial graphic design in 20th-century political modernism. Small tears and imperfections as in the photo
