Superb homogeneous set of three photographic Japanese postcard cards from the period (silver bromide prints, circa 1918). This lot powerfully testifies to the theatrical aesthetic and the fascinating visual codes of Kabuki theatre actors at the beginning of the 20th century. Detailed description card by card (Front): Card No. 1 – The Umbrella (Wagasa) Actor: Full-length portrait of a Kabuki actor with a fixed dramatic gaze, portraying a high-ranking male character. He wears a dark kimono adorned with a family crest (mon) on the shoulder and a polka-dot motif at the hem. He holds a large traditional paper umbrella (wagasa) opened behind him, creating a spectacular circular graphic background. Card No. 2 – The Armored Warrior (Samurai): Bust portrait of a young performer embodying a valiant samurai or warrior hero from the classical repertoire. He sports a black battle headdress and a meticulously detailed traditional armor (ōyoroi) over a kimono with bamboo leaf motifs. His hands are gripping the pommel of his swords (katana). Card No. 3 – The Onnagata (Feminine Role) at Tea Service: Interior composition showing a performer specialized in female roles (Onnagata). Seated in a ritual seiza posture on a tatami beside a sliding wooden shoji, the character is richly clad in a dark floral kimono with a jeweled obi. He holds a black service tray bearing a cast-iron teapot. Back description (Common to all three cards): The backs of these cards bear the official period markings “POST CARD” divided into two equal parts (post-1918 Japanese postal regulations). Publisher: Red printed inscription indicating manufacture by the Nakamura-ya house in Osaka (Ōsaka Nakamura-ya sei), a famous publisher in the Kansai region. Historical mark: Presence of a precious commemorative seal depicting a stone monument at Mount Ikoma (a sacred pilgrimage site between Osaka and Nara that was very frequented at the time), attesting to the buyer’s initial voyage. Characteristics and condition: Precise dating: Taishō era (Circa 1918 - 1925) Standard era dimensions (about 14 x 9 cm per card). Condition: Excellent overall conservation. The visuals are sharp and contrasted, with a beautiful original patina. The backs show light foxing and natural browning from time, with no handwriting or postage marks."
