Both had become instantly recognisable figures, not only through their art but through their carefully curated personas. Warhol’s silver-blond wigs, dark glasses and carefully cultivated air of mystery became as much a part of his identity as his famous screenprints. Beuys was equally distinctive in his felt hat, fishing vest and shepherd’s crook. These were not simply clothes, but part of a meticulously constructed image. Both artists understood that the artist could become a work of art in their own right, turning their lives and appearances into a kind of ongoing performance. Warhol’s screenprints of Beuys, made following their meeting, are a particularly fitting meeting of these two personalities. Warhol took a Polaroid portrait of Beuys in his familiar hat and vest and transformed it into a series of boldly coloured screenprints. The result is more than a portrait. Beuys had spent years creating his own unmistakable image; Warhol, the great artist of celebrity and repetition, turned that image into an icon. In doing so, the two artists seem to meet on common ground. Both understood the power of appearance, repetition and myth, and both knew that sometimes the most memorable artwork an artist can create is themselves.
