Ancient Sumakh Kilim from the Caucasus - Collectible - Carpet - 291 cm - 174 cm

An ancient Caucasian Sumakh-Kelim (often also written Sumak or Soumak) ranks among the most fascinating and technically demanding masterpieces of the textile tribal art of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Strictly speaking, Sumakh is not a classic kilim (slit kilim) but a flat weave with brocade techniques (weft-wrapping technique), in which the pattern threads are wrapped around the warp threads. This gives it its characteristic thick, relief-like texture and the strands of wool that hang loosely on the back, providing additional padding. • Origin: The best pieces come from the East Caucasus (historical area around the town of Shamakhi in present-day Azerbaijan) as well as from nomadic tribes such as the Shahsavan. • Motifs & symbolism: Characteristic are large, often tiered geometric medallions, stylized animal motifs (birds, dragons) and complex star- or cross-shaped forms that are deeply rooted in tribal mythology. • Material & colors: Pure, hand-spun sheep wool on a wool warp. Ancient pieces entice with entirely plant-based natural colors, which over decades have developed a beautiful, inimitable patina. With certificates of authenticity
