A die from Ancient Rome made of bone (astragalus), set in a removable spiral of silver-plated metal to easily extract/insert the die. It is linked to a modern chain-type necklace in 925 silver. In Ancient Rome dice games occupied a fascinating and ubiquitous place throughout society, from the highest spheres to the humblest taverns. The act of playing dice was known as alea; from this word comes the famous phrase attributed to Julius Caesar when crossing the Rubicon, "Alea iacta est" — The die is cast. To prevent cheating, Romans used wooden or leather cups called fritillus to shake and cast the dice onto boards or tables.
