Ancient Roman Bronze Fibula (No reserve price)

Roman Noric-Pannonian Double-Knob Fibula – Almgren 236 – probably Garbsch A236a – Bronze – Early Imperial Period Very well preserved Roman Noric-Pannonian double-knob fibula made of bronze, typologically assignable to the Almgren 236 group. Based on its characteristic features, the fibula is likely closely related to the early Garbsch A236a variant. Characteristic features include the stout bow widening toward the head, the two distinctly profiled transverse knobs, and the elongated, frame-shaped open-work foot with several internal struts. The head area is smoothly formed and lacks a pronounced mid-ridge. Particularly noteworthy is the largely complete condition. The spiral mechanism and the long original pin are preserved. One of the fine internal struts of the open-work frame foot is broken roughly in the middle and bent in the lower part. The strut itself is still present. This is clearly visible in the close-up photos. The surface shows a naturally grown green to dark-green patina with areas of brown or reddish corrosion and age-related deposits. Identification: Noric-Pannonian double-knob fibula Type: Almgren 236, probably Garbsch A236a Dating: Late Augustan to early 1st century AD Cultural realm: Roman / Noric-Pannonian region Material: Bronze / copper alloy Length: 8.2 cm Max width: 2.1 cm Weight: 29 g Condition: Very good overall condition with preserved spiral mechanism and long pin. A fine internal strut of the open-work foot is broken in the middle and bent in the lower section, but the strut remains complete. Patina, corrosion, and signs of wear consistent with age as shown in the photographs. Literature comparison: Jochen Garbsch, Die norisch-pannonische Frauentracht im 1. und 2. Jahrhundert, Munich 1965, Almgren 236 group, particularly the early A236a–c variants. Provenance: The fibula was acquired by me in 2003 from a private collection in Munich and has been in my possession ever since. The seller guarantees that he legally acquired this lot and is entitled to sell the object. Shipping: Insured DHL parcel shipping within the European Union. Shipping only possible within the EU. Please note this before placing a bid.
