Some lead sling bullets bore inscriptions intended to intimidate or mock the enemy. In this case, the Greek inscription ΑΩΡΟΥ (AROPOY) means “immature” or “green,” alluding to a fruit that has not yet ripened. It is a play on words: the projectile is compared to a fruit, but not a desirable one, rather a green and unpleasant-to-receive fruit. It is a form of ironic humor with which the slinger ridiculed his opponent just before impact. OBJECT: Lead sling bullet with Greek legend ΑΩΡΟΥ? MATERIAL: Lead CULTURE: Greek PERIOD: 4th century B.C. DIMENSIONS: 32 x 17 mm WEIGHT: 35.22 g Condition: almost perfectly preserved, very nice patina. It bears on its surface the calcifications and concretions typical of its age, and these are the best guarantee of its authenticity.
