Greek-Hellenistic matrix lamp, 1st century BCE. Greek terracotta oil lamp of Hellenistic time, Greece, 1st century BCE. Made from gray clay in a matrix. The lamp has a stocky, profiled body with a long, drawn-out snout and a large wick opening, as well as a high-set ring handle. The slightly recessed disk features a central filling opening. The descending shoulder is decorated with radially arranged grooves or notches. The handle shows longitudinal ribbing. A very close comparison can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Inv. 74.51.2136). The specimen there, also dated to the 1st century BCE, is described as a matrix-formed Greek-Hellenistic lamp with ring handle, slightly concave disk, radially grooved shoulder and a compact body. The dimensions 10.5 × 3.5 cm also agree.
