ANACREON. Teij odae [in Greek]. Paris, Henri Estienne, 1554. Small in-4, fawn Russian leather, wide rocaille iron framing, ornate spine, red and blue title-pieces, interior roulette, roulette on the edges, gilt edges (18th century binding). Editio princeps of Anacreon's poems, and the first book published by Henri II Estienne. The edition, which is as beautiful as it is rare, contains the Greek text, followed by Estienne's Latin translation and commentary. (Renouard, Estienne, p. 114.) Anacreon, the great lyric poet of ancient Greece, was one of the favorite sources of the Pléiade poets. The publication of his poésies champêtres was a literary event in early 1554, and Ronsard enthusiastically sang of his friend Estienne's success: Dedans cette grand coupe d'or, / Je vois boire à Henry Estienne, / Qui des enfers nous a rendu / Du vieil Anacreon perdu / La douce Lyre Teïenne (quoted by Paul Laumonier in Ronsard, poète lyrique, 1909, pp. 120 et seq.). Old handwritten note on verso of title and comments by the same hand in the margins of a few leaves. Label of New York bookseller William Salloch. From the Hans Furstenberg library at Château de Beaumesnil (2013, no. 102). Small tear with paper loss in inner margin of title, light marginal wetness to several leaves, last leaf soiled. Joints cracked, title-pieces slightly missing, some minor restorations. Provenance: Stéphane Clavreuil bookshop.
