Todas las subastas / Etnográfica / An Impressive Chinese Carved Wood Painted Head of Guanyin
Probably Yuan or early Ming dynasty, 13th- 14th century, possibly earlier, carved from single piece of wood applied with layers of gesso ground and pigments, the substantial head depicts the bodhisattva with a full fleshy face with a serene expression, heavy-lidded meditative eyes beneath arched brows, a straight nose, a small bow-shaped mouth, and a raised urna at the center of the forehead, her hair is incised in waves gathered beneath a draped hood, a flat area under at front of her chignon corresponds to where an image of the Buddha Amitabha or other decoration would have originally been. 17 x 8 1/2 x 8 in. Purchased from an estate in the Upper East Side, New York City in 2010. This head would have been originally part of a larger full size sculpture of the Bodhisattva Guanyin. Extensive loss to paint; scattered stress cracks to wood, some quite deep; smooth empty space where carved Buddha should be on head; losses to pigment and gesso ground; losses and wear to the carved elements at the back of the head; extremities and surface details worn smooth from handling and weathering; possible old repairs; stable overall.
