An 18th Century American Carved Ostrich Egg Dated 1797, inscribed for Edward Longley, elaborately carved with the bottom in the form of a compass rose with "Longley" inscribed on the cardinals, the middle of the egg having pictorial panels depicting The Annunciation, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph with an angel, and two pastoral courting scenes (one ostensibly Longley and is wife) flanked by heraldic animals, miniature figures, and flowers, the top of the egg decorated with a hunting scene. Family Provenance: Edward Longley was the grandfather of Lois Anna Longley Crane, and the great grandfather of Frank Edward Crane all of Erie, PA. This piece has descended in the consignor's family to this day. Dimensions: 6in in height, diameter is 5in Condition Scattered cracks and losses including a c. 2in loss to the top of the shell.
