Wells, BNJ 1923/24, pp. 51-59, no. 33; Ipswich Find, NumChron 1863, pp. 28-33= Sir J Evans = SNC, September-October 1916, no. 44908 same dies; Montagu I, 772(b); Doubleday 469 this coin; North 766; BMC IIb; S.1144), softness to strike of hand, otherwise richly and colourfully cabinet toned, almost very fine, and extremely rare; especially curious with the transposed 'Alpha and Omega' Provenance The Martin Waldron Collection of Anglo-Saxon, Norman and Plantagenet Coins Gordon Vincent Doubleday, Glendining, 6 October 1987, lot 469* - "almost very fine, an excessively rare variety at this mint, not listed in Hild. or SCBI, Cumulative Index, but apparently by Carson (77), in error as a regular issue." [with his ticket, and with lot ticket and envelope] Conceivably: Ipswich Hoard, recovered 1863 "On Saturday 24 October 1863, a workman employed in excavating at the corner formed by Old Butter Market and White Hart Lane, Ipswich found at the depth of several feet from the surface a roundish mass, which proved to consist of silver coins, mostly in such a state of oxidisation as to break at the slightest touch. Mr Richard S Francis, of Ipswich, who has kindly communicated an account of this discovery to me, considers there must have been about 500 coins in the mass, out of which some 100 or 120 were in anything like a good state of preservation. J. Evans" Reverend J H Pollixfen contributed further (NumChron 1868, p. 179), adding: "I find amongst the coins of Aethelred, which I have recently procured from the Ipswich hoard, the following varieties not in Mr Evans' lists..."Thetford - +EADGAR M-O DEOTFORD (W-A on reverse) Subject to 5% tax on Hammer Price in addition to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium.
