Beautiful set of three large-format octavo volumes constituting the original edition of this important historical study devoted to the Lyonnais people during the French Revolution, and particularly to the tragic events of the Siege of Lyon in 1793. The work traces the political and military upheavals of the city, the revolutionary clashes, the Lyonnaise resistance, the prominent figures of this period, as well as the events that followed up to 1795. Illustrations: A richly illustrated edition with plates hors texte after several Lyonnais artists, including notably portraits of historical figures, revolutionary scenes, military representations and views of Lyon. Among the photographed illustrations are notably: The arrival of the Montbrisonnais in Lyon. The death of the lawyer Balleydier. The portrait of Marie Adrian. The colonel du Rozier, commander-in-chief of the Forezian cavalry. The original sale description mentions 29 hors-texte engravings. The printed contents list 30. The folding plan of besieged Lyon, published in 1844, is absent from this copy. Bindings and condition: Very beautiful, homogeneous set in period bindings, half green morocco with corners. Spine with raised bands adorned with gilt rules and motifs, notably Phrygian caps, symbols of the French Revolution. Magnificent entirely gilt edges, still showing a very nice shine after nearly two centuries. The bindings are well preserved, with a few rubs and signs of use related to their age. Interior generally very fresh, clear typography, engravings showing excellent preservation. Presence of a few scattered foxmarks, sometimes more pronounced. A historic and decorative ensemble, interesting for both collectors of works on the French Revolution and enthusiasts of Lyon history and 19th-century fine bindings. The photographs are an integral part of the description and allow precise appreciation of the conservation state of this set.
