Abbé Pluche - Histoire du Ciel ou l'on recherche...

Rare illustrated edition of this characteristic work of religious and apologetic literature from the 18th century, in which the author seeks to explain the origin of pagan beliefs, ancient cults and mythological representations by confronting them with biblical narratives and a Christian conception of the history of humanity - This edition, published without a precise date but around 1771, is issued by the Estienne Brothers and corresponds to Volume I of a larger set, which means that the presented volume constitutes only part of Pluche's intellectual project - The title immediately reveals the book's double ambition, since it concerns both the study of the history of the heavens, i.e., the ancient conceptions relating to the stars, celestial phenomena and divine powers, and the search for how these natural observations would gradually have given birth to idolatry - Abbé Pluche - History of the Sky or where one searches for the origin of idolatry and the misapprehensions of philosophy - SD (circa 1771) - Volume I - The Estienne Brothers - 520 Pages. Good condition of the binding, work in its full period vellum, stains and wear from use, a few minor defects on boards and spine, red edges, smooth spine, titling and volume numbering in gold on a piece of morocco leather - Good interior condition, browning, small stains on the title page, pretty borders, beautiful initial, the work enriched with fine black-and-white plates outside the text including a frontispiece, endpapers in decent condition, a pleasing copy - Delivery service guaranteed within a few days –
