Description A prestigious volume belonging to the famous Franco Maria Ricci’s "Guide impossibili" series, edited by Gianni Guadalupi. Full title: "Zululand – or Adventures and Misadventures Among the Savages of Southern Africa" Original edition of 1993, first printing limited to 5,000 numbered copies. The present copy is no. 2144. The volume presents the refined editorial presentation characteristic of Franco Maria Ricci’s Guide impossibili: elegant black silk binding, gold titles, numerous illustrations and color plates applied, and the original protective case. Subject of the Volume The volume guides the reader through Southern Africa via the narratives of François Le Vaillant and Allen F. Gardiner, two European travelers and explorers who, in different eras, described the territories and peoples of the far south of the African continent. Their testimonies restore the historical image of Zululand and the Cape Flats (Caffraria), territories that, in the eyes of European travelers, appeared still remote and difficult to access. Landscapes, expeditions, encounters with local populations, customs, villages, and African fauna compose a tale in which geographical exploration intertwines with ethnographic observation. As in the other volumes of the Guide impossibili, particular interest lies in the historical perspective of the travelers: the book allows us to observe not only the Southern Africa of the past, but also how it was perceived, narrated, and represented by Europeans between the 18th and early 19th centuries. The rich iconographic apparatus, consisting of paintings, prints, and period images, accompanies the narratives and visually reconstructs territories, peoples, and environments encountered during these expeditions.
