The Dishes are modelled in an unusual large octagonal form, with a sunken bowl and raised border decorated with a reeded rim. The border is engraved with a contemporary Crest issuing from a Ducal Coronet. Both dishes are in excellent condition and are very well marked on the reverse, in addition to being engraved with their original scratch weight. The Crest is that of the Gregg family, as used by Francis Gregg (1734-1795) who was Member of Parliament for Morpeth 1789-1794. He was an attorney who was associated with the Earl of Carlisle and was also Clerk to the Skinners Company from 1759-1795. His son also held the Clerkship of the Skinners'. The Company that was to become Wakelin & Taylor was founded by George Wickes (1698-1761) who entered his mark at Goldsmiths' Hall in 1722. The Company moved to Panton Street, off Haymarket, in 1735, as a goldsmith and provider of jewellery and other luxury items to aristocratic patrons. Wickes was an accomplished silversmith who gained the patronage of Frederick, Prince of Wales. Two apprentices of Wickes, John Parker and Edward Wakelin, purchased the company following Wickes' retirement in 1760, replaced by John Wakelin and William Taylor in 1776. Wakelin & Taylor were patronised by the British Royal family, aristocrats and wealthy elite in Britain during this period. Height: 1 inch, 2.5 cm. Diameter: 11 inches, 27.5 cm. Weight: 50 oz the pair.
