A rare handmade Italian Milanese lace flounce. Made in the second half of the 17th century. This lace a flat tape bobbin lace of 'The Chase', depicting a hunting scene. Designed with baroque scrolling leaves, the base with a huntsman, hunting dogs chasing and trapping deer. Above bird, butterfly and snail motifs within the foliage. These expensive, fashionable laces were for Kings and top European Noblemen, to decorate counterpanes, bed linens and bed valances, of hunting lodges and palaces. 260cm long x 74cm deep. Containing two full repeats 71.5cm long and two end repeats; one 68cm long and the other 50cm long. Condition; This flounce has been part of a lace collection for the last 50-60 years. Bought as a length originally part of a larger flounce. A few of the ornate bracts have detached, and a few worn with use. With professional conservation these could be restored and reattached. Considering it has been used and its age, its condition is good.
