A Rare and Early Eight Day Marine Chronometer with the Original "Arnold" Detent Escapement, signed John Roger Arnold, London, numbered 470, circa 1816, A Rare and Early Eight Day Marine Chronometer with the Original "Arnold" Detent Escapement, signed John Roger Arnold, London, numbered 470, circa 1816, the later three tier mahogany case with concealed brass side carrying handles, brass bound corners, top lid with vacant brass cartouche, inside case with Kelvin & Hughes (Marine) Ltd cleaning label inscribed London 5772 dated January 1954, silvered dial with Roman numerals, 8-day power reserve and seconds dials, signed and numbered 470, single chain fusee 8-day movement signed Jno R Arnold Invtet Fecit London No.470, later bimetallic balance with timing screws, free sprung helical hairspring, diamond endstone, maintaining power, original "Arnold" detent escapement, movement housed in a brass gimbal 19.5cm high, Kelvin & Hughes (Marine) Ltd cleaning label inscribed London 5772 dated January 1954, 470, Jno R Arnold Invtet Fecit London No.470 To our Knowledge, a John Roger Arnold marine chronometer number 471 was illustrated in a German book on Chronometers and dated circa 1816. This numbered chronometer 471 had a later converted "Earnshaw" escapement. This present example number 470 is rare because this has the original "Arnold" escapement.
