Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), 19th century, red lacquer with mother-of-pearl inlay in the form of flowers, phoenixes, and auspicious fruit, each chest has three large openings divided by rows of four small drawers with bat shaped handles, the chest rests on a stand with shaped apron inlaid with phoenixes in mother-of-pearl. 46 x 28 1/2 x 16 1/2 in. Collection of Mrs. John McCain, Jr., Pearl Harbor and Washington, DC Roberta Wright McCain (1912-2020) was an American socialite and oil heiress. She was the wife of Admiral John S. McCain Jr., with whom she had three children including U.S. Senator John S. McCain III. Mrs. McCain was active in the Navy Wives Clubs and her Capitol Hill home was a popular salon for lawmakers and politicians. Her home was decorated with art and antiques she collected during her travels. This pair of cabinets is an excellent example of her fine taste. Accompanied by sales receipt dated August 30, 1968 from Eddy Chang's Co., Inc. Seoul, Korea. Good estate condition; some scratches to the top of each chest; small chips and flaking to edges of cabinets; scattered losses to mother-of-pearl inlay; some stains to fabric in interior of cabinets; one stand missing three corner blocks.
