Thomire trained under the sculptor Augustin Pajou and worked in the circle of the ciseleur-doreur Pierre Gouthiere, supplying gilt bronze mounts to the Sèvres manufactory before becoming the pre-eminent bronzier of the Napoleonic era and ciseleur de l'Empereur. The design proved enduringly popular and was repeated by other Parisian makers through the 19th Century
