A MATCHED PAIR OF REGENCY BRONZED AND PARCEL GILT X-FRAME STOOLS, CIRCA 1815

A MATCHED PAIR OF REGENCY BRONZED AND PARCEL GILT X-FRAME STOOLS AFTER A DESIGN BY THOMAS HOPE, CIRCA 1815 The curved frames with griffin-headed terminals and buttoned striped green silk velvet seats on lion paw feet 67cm high, 79cm wide, 50cm deep Provenance: Acquired from Mackinnon, London Sold in these rooms, A View from Across the Atlantic: The Pamela Ford Collection, 18th November 2025, Lot 38 (£10,000 excl. BP) These stools, designed in the French antique manner, derive from a ram-headed pattern published in Thomas Hope's, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pl.29 and intended for Hope's own Duchess Street house, effectively a museum where visitors could see Hope's collection inspired by antiquity (the Prince of Wales attended the grand opening in 1802). A stool conforming to Hope's design was sold from the collection of Ann and Gordon Getty, Christie's, New York, 23 October 2022, lot 508 ($25,200 including premium). Related variants of the pattern are illustrated in P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, Dictionary of English Furniture, Woodbridge, 1954, vol. I, p. 182, fig. 68, a lion-headed version, and another in M. Jourdain, Regency Furniture 1795-1820, London, 1948, fig.85, a ram-headed version from the collection of Viscount Allendale, Bretton Park. Condition Report: Generally good, structurally secure with dents marks and scratches due to age and use. Redecorated and with flaking and minor losses. Upholstery is clean. There are differences in detail and in construction, stool A with just a single bearer beneath the seat, and with metal braces supporting the joints, stool B with a double bearer beneath the seat. Stool A with feet made of single pieces of wood, stool B with feet made of pieced-up wood. Either method is an acceptable technique for making. There are also minor differences in the detail of the reeded bosses. Such stools were made in quantities so could easily be from different sources but matched up to make a `pair'. Overall in good clean and ready to use condition.
