It was then sold by Margaret Miller, Carnegie’s daughter, and remained together in Scotland with the purchaser until it was sold by his daughter Having established his eponymous workshop at 62 rue de Lancry, Paris in 1838 Ferdinand Barbedienne set out to become the preeminent producer of bronzes of the period. In pursuit of this aim he collaborated with many highly skilled craftsmen and artists, including the designer Louis-Constant Sévin (1821-1888), and the ciseleur Désiré Attarge (1820-1878). During his 23 years with Barbedienne, starting in 1855, Sévin was given free rein to direct the production of the finest finished objects, utilising the best materials with little consideration of the cost. Starting with the design, he then created various plaster models, which would then be revised prior to production of the final object. Désiré Attarge, “the chaser with magic fingers”, worked closely with Sévin on many of the companies most important commissions, his great skill bringing their bronzes to life with chasing comparable to the highest quality goldsmithing of the period. His work, as part of Barbedienne’s contributions to the 1878 Exposition Universelle, was commended posthumously as exceptional, and that no other “ciselet n’a donné à l’argent une peau plus soyeuse, une chaire plus délicat” (Gazette des Beaux-Arts, tome XVIII, 1 July 1878, pp. 615-6). “ciselet n’a donné à l’argent une peau plus soyeuse, une chaire plus délicat” This suite is a fine example of the excellent quality of the decorative objects being produced by the Maison Barbedienne during the Second French Empire and the beginning of the Third Republic. The rare visibility of the names of Attarge, Sévin, and Barbedienne on the pieces is testament not only to the collaboration required to create the highest and most innovative forms of industrial art, but also the understandable pride resulting from doing so. Objects such as these were regularly exhibited and awarded prizes at the Expositions Universalles that took place in the second half of the 19th century.
