A GEORGE III CREAM PAINTED AND PARCEL GILT SIDE OR CONSOLE TABLE CIRCA 1760 With a Sicilian jasper top 90cm high, 179cm wide, 84cm deep Provenance: Christie's New York, Property from the collection of Robert Wood Johnson, 2nd June 2015, Lot 79 ($75,000 incl. BP.) This console table is designed in the 'Modern' Roman manner illustrated in the final edition of Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754-62. The design of the supports was adopted for Roman patterned sideboard-tables with marble tops, such as that recorded in the inventory of Newby Hall, Yorkshire by Thomas Chippendale the Younger in 1792, described as 'A Carv'd Mahogany Sideboard Table with Marble Slabs Egyptian £10'.
