A CARVED GILTWOOD AND VELVET UPHOLSTERED 'DUNDAS' SOFA IN GEORGE III STYLE, AFTER THE MODEL DESIGNED BY ROBERT ADAM AND MADE BY THOMAS CHIPPENDALE, CONTEMPORARY 114cm high, 215cm wide, 91.5cm deep The famous 'Dundas' suite, was commissioned in 1764 by Sir Lawrence Dundas, Bt. (d. 1781) and designed by the architect Robert Adam (d.1792) for the principal drawing room of his London mansion at 19 Arlington Street. Thomas Chippendale invoiced for '4 large Sofas Exceeding Rich to match the Chairs' at a total cost of £216 for all four. Two of the sofas from this suite were sold as a pair, Christie's London, 3rd Marquess of Zetland's Will Trust, 3rd July 1997, lot 101 (£1,541,500 incl. BP) and a single from the same suite also sold Christie's London, Exceptional Furniture (7676), 18th June 2008, lot 5 (£2,169,250 incl. BP).
