96th Regiment of Foot Insignia. A very good, scarce and original unidentified early gilt on brass example of either an unrecorded Shoulder Belt Plate, or possibly another form of period accoutrement for a mounted senior Officer’s Sabretache, etc., circa 1816-18, with a Georgian crown surmounting a battle honour scroll ‘Peninsula’, above a Sphinx with a shouldered captured French flag, resting upon a plinth with the battle honour ‘Egypt’, with ‘96’ below to the voided centre, within an ivy weath, above a regimental title scroll ‘Queens Own’, worn only between 1816-18 when the regiment was disbanded, of the same design as a regimental Button (See Parkyn, P. 271), with the addition of a Georgian crown, the shouldered captured French flag upon the Sphinx was only worn by the regiment for two years between 1816-1818, the front in original and very fine condition, the reverse with minor traces of period solder repairs on a few areas of the wreath with two large square non-folding blade fixings, north and south, with some over splash of the gilding upon the reverse, very good condition and scarce £400-£500.
