Four copperengravings with scenes from the life of Kings David and Salomon. Designs of Hieronymus Francken (1540-1610) - engraved by Jan Snellinck (1544/49- 1638) In first or second state, wide margins, some wrinkles, all in passepartouts. Publisehd by Gerard de Jood around A.D. 1590. no 1) King Saul tries to smite David with his spear: First Book of Judges chapter 19: "Insidiis Davida petit rex Saulus, et ipsum Dextra dei mira pro bonitate tegit" - Saul seeking to smite David with the javelin. Signed in the lower left corner of the plate: H.C.F. no 2) David takes the spear and vessels of king Saul as decribed in the First Book of Samuel chapter 26: Text in the plate: '' Accesit in noctu tenta David, Hine aufert regis pocula et arma suis' In translation: "David approached the tents by night; from there, he took the king’s vessels and weapons for his own men". Meaning and Biblical context The text refers directly to the account in 1 Samuel 26, in which David is fleeing from King Saul: • The infiltration: David, accompanied by his nephew Abishai, stealthily enters Saul’s military camp at night while the king and his soldiers have fallen into a deep sleep. • The spoils: Rather than killing the sleeping king (as Abishai suggests), David refuses to lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed. Instead, he takes Saul’s spear (weapons) and his water jug (vessels), which were placed at the king’s bedside. • The evidence: Later, from a safe distance, David uses these items to prove to Saul that he had been very close to him and had deliberately spared his life. no 3 ) naar Rechteren hfts 2: Text in the plate: "Adonias frustra regalia sceptra cupivit. Nam succescorem rex Salomona vocat" In translation: 'Adonijah longed for the royal scepter, but in vain—for the king proclaimed Solomon as his successor'. Meaning and background • Adonijah was the elder son of King David. As David grew old and frail, Adonijah attempted to claim the throne for himself, declaring himself king. • However, King David intervened—prompted by Bathsheba and the prophet Nathan—and, honoring a previous promise, designated his younger son, Solomon, as the rightful successor. • Consequently, Adonijah’s attempt failed completely. no 4) King Salomon is looking at the buiding site of the first temple in Jerusalem: Book of Kings chapter 6: Text in the plate: ''Ecce vides alti sublimia templis columnis, Et clari imprimis nobile regis opus" In translation: Look, you see the lofty heights of the temple with its tall columns, and in particular the noble work of the famous king." Dimensions of the engravings: 20,5 x 28 cm. Registered shipping.
