A beautiful lot of two bottles of Volnay Les Vieilles Vignes 2021 from Vincent Girardin, one of the well-established names of the Côte de Beaune. This cuvée is produced from 100% Pinot Noir from old vines in Volnay. Sources specialising in the domaine indicate vines of approximately 60 years of age from several parcels in the appellation, with the wine matured for around 14 months in 228-litre French oak barrels. The 2021 vintage particularly suits the elegant character of Volnay. The wine displays delicate aromas of violet, rose, red berries and aromatic herbs, followed by a refined palate with fresh red fruit, fine silky tannins and an elegant, energetic structure. A Burgundy focused more on finesse, freshness and perfume than sheer power. Vinification & ageing The 2021 was aged for approximately 14 months on fine lees in French oak, with a relatively restrained proportion of new oak. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, and one detailed account of this vintage reports bottling without fining or filtration. Good overall condition. Capsules appear intact and wine levels are excellent. The labels show some light marks/staining, clearly visible in the photographs, particularly on the right-hand bottle.
