19th C. Robert Sorby Scotch Pattern Hatchet Head, Sheffield, England

Europe, England, Sheffield, Robert Sorby. A forged hatchet head in the Scotch pattern, with a broad, flared bit that narrows at a deep waist before swelling into rounded cheeks around the eye. A squared poll sits at the back. Each face carries the maker's stamp "ROBT SORBY / SHEFFIELD" beneath a small crowned device, followed by the number "053" and a small upright figure, perhaps the firm's trademark. The side of the poll is struck "STEEL POLD," likely a shortened form of "steel polled," meaning the striking end was faced with steel. The surface has a dark brown to russet patina over hammered metal, and the forging marks are still easy to read. The head is shown on a custom display stand, and the bold outline of the pattern reads almost like sculpture. The Robert Sorby firm has made edge tools in Sheffield since the early 19th century, and it is one of the few historic makers still working in the city. For most of the 1800s Sheffield was the world's leading center of steel production. Its crucible steel, and the dense network of forgers, grinders, and finishers around it, supplied woodworkers, shipwrights, and farmers across the British Empire and beyond. Sorby built its name on carving and turning tools: gouges, parting tools, scrapers, and hatchets meant to be bought once and used for a lifetime. The "Scotch" pattern is one of many regional axe and hatchet forms that Sheffield makers listed in their trade catalogs. Each pattern was named for the market or trade it served, and a factory might offer dozens of them, each in several sizes. Numbers stamped on a head, like the "053" here, often recorded a pattern or size in a maker's list. Stamps that mention a steel poll told buyers the hammering end had been hardened as well as the cutting edge, a mark of quality for a tool that served as both blade and mallet. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 205988
