1998 Chevalier-Montrachet. Clos de Chevaliers. Grand cru. Domaine Jean Chartron. Level: 2 cm under cork. Capsule: excellent. Label: exelent. The Vintage Defied the Odds: 1998 was a notoriously difficult growing season in Burgundy, plagued by severe spring frost, hail, and mildew. White wines from this vintage were generally low in acidity and evolved quickly. The Chartron Exception: Despite the vintage's poor reputation for whites, top Grand Crus from elite houses managed to thrive. The Hachette Wine Guide awarded this specific bottling 2 stars ("vin remarquable"), praising its aromas of candied peach and apricot, fig, butter, and toasted almond. On the palate, it was described as wonderfully rich and smooth (très gras) but precisely balanced by a fine, energetic saline minerality.
