Up for auction: four bottles of Chateau Montrose 1975 red wine. They come from the estate of my late father who had a nice collection of wines. All wines were kept very carefully in his own wine cellar. As can be seen in the photos the labels have just minimal wear. One of them has been taped with clear tape and two have been re-glued. On the site of the chateau the following can be found on the year 1975: Main characteristics of the vintage As April was mild, the vine did not grow too early nor too late. May and June were fair with violent storms. Some Medoc vineyards were damaged by the hail, but Montrose was saved. The flowering of the vine developed in good conditions (mid-blossoming in June 15th) with practically no coulure. July and August were engaged a few minor storms. The presence of atmospheric disturbances and little rain favoured the change of colour of the berries by the end of August and early September. Afterwards, the weather was sunny. The weather was overall fine, hot enough (24-25°C in the afternoon) and very often stormy, except on September 30th: it rained in the morning, forcing us to stop the harvest for the day. Good quality and full wine. Tasting notes Deep, dense, and ruby colour The nose is soft and complex. It displays scents of red berries and currants, undergrowth, and cold tobacco. The palate is long and silky. Very elegant with melted tannins. The wine is complex, subtle, and well-balanced. Descriptions found on the internet: Robert Parker (88) Still backward, although the color is beginning to exhibit amber/rust at the edge, this large-scaled, muscular, charmless Montrose is structured enough to be admired, but I wonder if there is enough fruit to hold for another 10 years? Full-bodied, with earthy, dusty, red and black fruit aromas Winespectator (88) I like the aromas of currant, berry and fresh herbs. Full-bodied, firm and chewy, with a slightly dry tannin structure, like many 1975s, but gorgeous fruit and clarity in this wine. Very good despite the hardness. 4/16/2026 - Sundbyberg wrote:93 Points St Estephe dinner on Thursday evening with four wines from chateau Montrose. 1975: This has reached its drinking window and drinks well straight from the bottle, althought we decanted. Very soild even if not as fruity as todays wines. In the photos you can see the level of fill, the condition of the label and the condition of the metal capsule at the top.
