No registration certificate; no MOT It was a bold idea for its time. Whilst Montesa was focusing the bulk of its resources on the large competition-spec Cota models that dominated the world of trial, the Barcelona-based manufacturer took the time to design a machine aimed at children and beginners, a miniature Cota, faithful in spirit to its bigger sisters but scaled down for riders just discovering the sport. It was a long-term vision from a brand that understood that tomorrow’s champions are forged on today’s machines. Its 25 cm³ two-stroke engine is a tiny, endearing piece of machinery, remarkably light and manoeuvrable – a bike that even the most inexperienced riders can handle without fear, yet one that already conveys the fundamental sensations of trial riding. The frame, suspension and overall geometry are directly inspired by the larger Cota models – a technical consistency that allows the novice rider to progress on a machine genuinely designed for the discipline, rather than on a toy disguised as a motorbike. 1974 was a fine year for Montesa; the brand was at the height of its art in trials, and the Cota 25-C benefited from all the experience accumulated by the Barcelona-based engineers through their involvement in international competition. Produced in very limited numbers and intended for a niche market by definition, it has rarely been looked after with the care it deserved, as children’s bikes are among the most mistreated and neglected of all motorbikes.
