1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5L Convertible

1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5L Convertible

1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5L Convertible - One of the very first 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet models produced - One of the first examples produced (chassis No. 000014) - Sold new in France - Owned by the same family since 1972 - Rare and sought-after colour combination - The ultimate and most powerful evolution of the W111 Cabriolet - Sought-after 3.5-litre V8 fuel-injected engine At the dawn of the 1970s, Mercedes-Benz brought its prestigious series of W111 coupes and convertibles to its peak. First introduced in the late 1950s, this generation is characterised by the timeless elegance of its design, conceived under the leadership of French designer Paul Bracq, combined with a level of build quality and refinement that were then considered as benchmarks in the automotive industry. Unveiled in 1969, the 280 SE 3.5 L was known as the ultimate and above all, the most powerful iteration of this prestigious series. Hidden underneath its long bonnet is the new 3,499 cc Mercedes-Benz M116 V8 engine with fuel injection, producing around 200 hp. This modern and particularly refined engine transformed the characteristics of the grand convertible: its performance was now on par with its status, with no compromise on the quietness, comfort and sophistication that characterised the prestigious Mercedes models of that era. The 280 SE 3.5 model also stands out from previous versions thanks to several aesthetic improvements, most notably its lower and wider grille, which makes it look more modern and dynamic. Although, the design still remains remarkably clean and understated. Its balanced proportions, subtle touches of chrome and the absence of a central pillar when all four windows are down gives this convertible a sophistication almost unmatched. This particular example has several distinctive features which sets it apart from others. Its chassis number is 11102712000014. This extremely low number indicates that it was produced at the very early stages of the 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet’s production run, therefore making it one of the very first cars produced in this highly desirable configuration. This car was one of the first to be delivered new in France to its first owner, a Parisian who registered it as 132 JLJ 75 on the 13th April 1970. Its colour selection is exceptional, combining the sky-blue bodywork with navy-blue leather upholstery. In 1972, the current owner’s grandfather acquired the car. He recalls having bought it from the Givenchy family; however, at the time of writing, we have still not received confirmation from the archives department of the Paris Prefecture. His grandson took possession of the car two years ago, but since it has rarely been driven, he decided to sell it. This example captivates buyers with the charm and authenticity of its remarkable condition. Unlike many examples which have had extensive restoration work carried out across several decades, this 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet has retained a large proportion of its original parts, which gives it a particularly impressive presence and authenticity today. The bodywork did not have any major restoration work carried out. Only the paintwork was redone some twenty years ago and thanks to the high quality of its finish, it still retains a very attractive overall appearance today. It complements the well-preserved character of the car perfectly, without detracting from the patina and charm that only a car carefully looked after for over half a century can offer. A closer look at the bodywork also reveals this level of preservation. The doors and bonnet are beautifully aligned with consistent gaps – details that are particularly important on these elegant convertibles, which required meticulous build quality. The doors, bonnet and boot seamlessly blend into the bodywork’s lines, further attesting to the overall quality of this example. All the upholstery and carpets are in their original condition, displaying a lovely patina that only time can create. The engine runs brilliantly and was regularly serviced by the family who have owned it for 54 years! Behind the wheel, the 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet offers an experience that perfectly encapsulates Mercedes-Benz’s vision of grand touring. The V8 engine is responsive and discreet at low revs before revealing its full potential as the speed increases. As the ultimate evolution of the W111 Cabriolet, the most powerful version in the range and in this instance, one of the very first to be produced – delivered new in France and in the hands of the same family since 1972 – this Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5L Cabriolet brings together all the qualities desired by a discerning collector.
