1924 Babe Ruth “Insurance City” professional model baseball bat (PSA/DNA “GU 9”)

1924 Babe Ruth “Insurance City” professional model baseball bat (PSA/DNA “GU 9”)

1924 Babe Ruth “Insurance City” professional model baseball bat (PSA/DNA “GU 9”). Louisville Slugger 125 model bat with Ruth facsimile signature in the barrel measures 36” long and weighs 39.6oz. Uncracked with nice use including ball contact marks which are concentrated on the left side of the hitting surface. This is a particularly desirable trait for Ruth who employed a label down grip. The combination of centerbrand characteristics and factory ordering records (as they relate to both the length and weight) help pinpoint the year of manufacture to 1924 specifically. The provenance of the bat relates to Ruth’s long tenured ties to the Hartford, Connecticut area beginning with his time with Red Sox and continuing into his play with the Yankees during the 1920. William Lawson lived with his family on Retreat Ave. in Hartford, CT during the 1920s era frequently attending family dinners with his brother-in-law, Albert Saunders, a noted mason/bricklayer and union official in the area. During one such dinner Saunders relayed to Lawson and his family that Babe Ruth would frequent a nearby Hartford liquor store to briefly socialize and even have a drink or two in the back of the package store with its proprietors while passing through the area. Although certainly ‘in character’ for Ruth, the story was not believed by Lawson who doubted its veracity as told by his brother-in-law. Subsequently, during one such visit by Ruth to the package store Saunders sent word to Lawson to come down and “see for himself”. It was at that time which William Lawson did in fact meet Babe Ruth who retrieved one of his baseball bats from his automobile and gave it to William. The bat descended to William Lawson’s son, Thomas, and has been in his possession until its current offering. Very fine Ruth bat dating to the prime of this career having primary source provenance being offered publicly for the first time. Includes LOA from John Taube 9PSA/DNA GU 9) and letter of provenance from Thomas Lawson: EX
