The rarity of the Proof 1879 eagle is similar to that of the Proof 1872, an example of which issue is also being offered in this sale. Both were produced to the extent of just 30 coins, and while the Proof 1879 is rated slightly lower as Rarity-6 (as opposed to Rarity-7- for the Proof 1872) it is only marginally less available with a mere 12 to 14 coins believed extant (per John W. Dannreuther, 2018). With one example each in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution and American Numismatic Society, any opportunity to acquire a Proof 1879 eagle for private ownership is a significant and fleeting one. This one is almost certainly a coin that was released into circulation by an early owner, for it displays moderately marked surfaces, friction in the fields, and light rub to the high points. Still boldly to sharply defined overall, nonetheless, with hints of reflectivity peering from the protected areas as the coin rotates into direct lighting.
