1877 Pattern Quarter Dollar. Judd-1499, Pollock-1652. Rarity-8+. Silver.

The Unique Judd-1499 Pattern Quarter Dollar 1877 Pattern Quarter Dollar. Judd-1499, Pollock-1652. Rarity-8+. Silver. Reeded Edge. Proof-63 (PCGS). Obv: Bust of Liberty faces left with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST along the upper border, in small letters, 13 stars arranged around much of the rest of the border, seven left, six right, and the date 1877 below. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, and her hair is tied back with a ribbon. This motif is similar to William Barber's famous Sailor Head design of 1875. Rev: The same design that the Mint used to strike regular issue 1877 Liberty Seated quarters. As the only known example of this Judd number, the quality of this unique coin takes a back seat to its rarity. This is perhaps fortunate, for the quality of this piece is somewhat of a mixed bag. It has unfortunately been cleaned at some time in the past, the surfaces noticeably subdued overall. The in-hand appearance benefits from a lack of distracting marks and hairlines, however, and both sides have been retoned in muted pewter-olive gray with underlying lilac-blue and antique gold iridescence that further elevates the eye appeal. Strike detail is razor sharp to full throughout. Close inspection with a loupe is required to discern some ancient surface build up nestled among some of the obverse motifs; a tiny carbon spot low on Liberty's neck is the most obvious identifier to distinguish this coin in the unlikely event that a second example of Judd-1499 surfaces at some point in the future. This die pairing is also known in copper, Judd-1500, of which eight examples are confirmed per the uspatterns.com website. While obviously rare, that is only metallic composition that most collectors can hope to use to represent this design type in an advanced pattern collection. For those seeking either the utmost in rarity or absolute completion of their Judd number set, our offering of the unique Judd-1499 pattern quarter dollar in silver represents what could very well be a once in a lifetime bidding opportunity, and one that deserves the most aggressive strategy. Provenance: Ex William Woodin Collection; 1914 ANS Catalogue, page 91, listed as A.W. 1541; Waldo C. Newcomer; J.C.
