1877 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-1534a, Pollock-1701. Rarity-8+. Silver.

The Garrett-Simpson Judd-1534a Pattern Half Dollar Unique 1877 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-1534a, Pollock-1701. Rarity-8+. Silver. Reeded Edge. Proof-65+ (PCGS). Medallic alignment. Obv: Liberty head faces left with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above, date 1877 below, and 13 stars arranged around the border seven left, six right. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY in raised letters and decorated with wheat ears, cotton leaves and bolls. Rev: An eagle with upraised wings is perched on a tablet on which is inscribed the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The eagle clutches an olive branch and three arrows in its right talon and supports a shield with its left talon. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed along the upper border, the denomination HALF DOLLAR along the lower border. Delight surfaces are originally toned in steel gray and russet patina backlit by vivid iridescence in antique gold, apricot and powder blue. Smartly impressed and crisp, with expectably smooth surfaces at the premium Gem grade level. Although the depth of toning precludes appreciation of this feature at most viewing angles, the finish is cameoed with softly frosted motifs set against reflective fields. This is one of numerous extremely rare die pairings of pattern 1877 half dollars. In this case only two are known in copper, Judd-1534, with the Judd-1534a specimen in silver offered here unique. Given the number of similar offerings in this sale, this is certainly a major numismatic event for advanced pattern enthusiasts. Provenance: Ex George W. Cogan; T.
