Rare Mint State 1872-CC Liberty Seated Dollar Ex Bareford Numismatic Provenance to 1950 1872-CC Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. OC-1. Rarity-3+. MS-61 (PCGS). As one of the few Uncirculated survivors of this elusive Carson City Mint issue, this coin stands tall among our extensive Liberty Seated dollar offerings through the years. Predominantly bright silver gray in appearance, both sides also reveal blushes of vivid cobalt blue and reddish-gold iridescence at the borders. The strike is well executed with bold to sharp detail over most design elements. Glossy in texture also lightly hairlined to confirm a long-ago cleaning, although the in-hand appearance is attractive with no sizeable marks to distract the unaided eye. The Carson City Mint produced only 3,150 silver dollars in 1872. Repeating a standard scenario for early gold and silver issues from this coinage facility, the 1872-CC dollars were routinely released into local and regional commerce. Probably some were eventually shipped to China, where there was a great appetite for silver metal. Writing in his 2020 reference The Confident Carson City Coin Collector, CC-Mint expert Rusty Goe estimates that 250 to 300 exist today in all grades. A similar estimate by Dick Osburn and Brian Cushing (2018) suggest just 250 surviving pieces in total. The latter acknowledge a small hoard of about 100 examples having been distributed in 2015 through 2017, though in general market appearances for straight-graded EF and AU examples tend to be few and far between. For Mint State survivors they are even fewer, not surprising since Rusty Goe asserts that only 17 to 20 coins are extant at this level. Advanced specialists in Liberty Seated dollars and Carson City Mint coinage would be wise to take full advantage of this significant opportunity. Provenance: From Numismatic Gallery's sale of February 1950, lot 163; our (Stack's) sale of the Harold L. Bareford Collection, October 1981, lot 430. PCGS Population: 3; 9 finer (MS-65 finest).
