1866 Pattern Shield Nickel. Judd-499, Pollock-584. Rarity-7+. Bronze.

Vividly Toned 1866 Pattern Shield Nickel Judd-499 in Bronze Ex Crouch-Simpson 1866 Pattern Shield Nickel. Judd-499, Pollock-584. Rarity-7+. Bronze. Plain Edge. Proof-65 BN (PCGS). Obv: Similar to the adopted Shield nickel design, but the date is divided by the ball of the shield and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is expressed in tiny letters. The remnants of an errant T can be seen in the field slightly past the final letter T in TRUST. Rev: The With Rays design that the Mint used for regular issue Shield nickel coinage in 1866 and early 1867. One of only half a dozen or so examples of this Judd number extant, and a superior example in terms of both quality and eye appeal. The beautifully toned surfaces are dressed in dominant walnut and antique copper brown patina, backlit by intensely vivid multicolored iridescence in antique gold, champagne-apricot, salmon-pink and lilac-blue. Fully struck and expertly preserved, provenance concerns alone compel us to mention trivial carbon spots on the reverse within the bottom of the digit 5 in the denomination, against the ball, and at the border before the word CENTS. This type was a favorite with pattern specialist Dr. Walter Lee Crouch, who had three impressions from these dies struck in either copper or bronze. They appeared together at auction in three consecutive lots in Superior Galleries' sale of June 1977. Offered here is one of the Crouch coins, lot 197 in the Superior sale. Provenance: Ex Superior's sale of the Dr. Walter Lee Crouch Collection, June 1977, lot 197; our (Bowers and Ruddy's) Rare Coin Review No. 30, p. 67; Bowers and Ruddy, March 1978; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the J.E.
