1865 Pattern Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. Judd-434, Pollock-507.

The Amon Carter-Simpson 1865 Judd-434 With Motto Seated Dollar 1865 Pattern Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. Judd-434, Pollock-507. Rarity-7-. Silver. Reeded Edge. Proof-66+ Cameo (PCGS). CAC. Obv: The same design that the Mint used to strike regular issue 1865 Liberty Seated silver dollars. Rev: The With Motto design adopted for regular issue Liberty Seated silver dollar coinage in 1866. An old friend of our firm, and displaying the distinct pattern of toning seen on many of the Amon Carter Family's Liberty Seated dollars. The obverse of this piece exhibits vivid cobalt blue and reddish-apricot peripheral toning that yields to lighter iridescent gold toward the center. The more boldly toned reverse is dressed in dominant rose-gray patina with blushes of cobalt blue at the border. Strike detail is full throughout, the expertly preserved and pristine-looking surfaces revealing a boldly cameoed finish as the coin rotates under lighting. Beautiful! Unlike most other "transitional" With Motto Liberty Seated types of 1863-1865, the Judd-434 silver dollar seems to have been struck as early as December 1865; the uspatterns.com website notes in this regard: "there are several December 1865 requests to James Pollock by collectors requesting examples in both silver and copper." Nevertheless, most extant examples are restrikes made circa 1869 and into the early 1870s for distribution to contemporary collectors as part of complete sets. Slightly more than a dozen examples of this Judd number are believed extant, and among those in private hands this one is unsurpassed in terms of both quality and eye appeal.
