1846 Liberty Seated Dime. JD-1, Fortin-102. Rarity-7. Proof-65 (NGC).

The Pittman-Kaufman Proof 1846 Dime From an Estimated Mintage of Just 12 Coins 1846 Liberty Seated Dime. JD-1, Fortin-102. Rarity-7. Proof-65 (NGC). The history and rarity of the Proof 1846 dime mirror that of its Proof half dime, quarter, half dollar and silver dollar counterparts of the year, examples of which are also being offered in this sale. The mintages of all these issues are unknown, having been unrecorded by Mint personnel in an era that preceded the beginning of wholesale marketing of Proof coinage to collectors by more than a decade. During the 1840s, in contrast, these special coins were prepared in (extremely) limited numbers, and almost exclusively at the request of government officials for presentation or other official purposes, and to fill orders by the few numismatists active in the Northeast at that time. Writing in the 2025 volume of his United States Proof Coins reference series John W. Dannreuther provides slightly different estimates for the mintages of the Proof silver issues of this date, ranging from 12 to 16 coins; while virtually all of these coins were distributed as part of complete Proof sets, a few Proof singles may have been made of one denomination or another to meet numismatic demand. Regardless, the actual mintages for each of the Proof 1846 silver coin denominations were extremely limited. Given their special nature and the manner in which they were distributed, most of the coins produced have survived, but with so few struck to begin with, examples are understandably rare today. Offered is the Pittman-Kaufman specimen of the Proof 1846 dime, one of just nine or 10 coins believed extant for the issue (per Dannreuther). It is a handsome Gem warmly toned in soft dove gray with a hint of mauve. The reverse periphery is further enhanced by blushes of deeper steel-olive, both sides with pretty champagne-pink and/or cobalt blue undertones discernible with the aid of direct lighting. The fields glow with subtle reflectivity as the coin rotates under a strong light source, the design elements lightly frosted in finish and fully struck. The rims are broad, squared off, and display a partial wire rim on both sides. Close inspection with a loupe finds no post-production blemishes of note. A few tiny lint marks and related strike throughs are evident here and there around the obverse periphery, most noticeably at stars 6 and 7, while a tiny spot in the field below the inside lower right point of star 3 is the most useful identifier for provenance purposes.
