1845 Braided Hair Half Cent. Second Restrike. B-3. Rarity-6-. Small

The Missouri Cabinet Proof 1845 B-3 Half Cent Second Restrike 1845 Braided Hair Half Cent. Second Restrike. B-3. Rarity-6-. Small Berries, Reverse of 1840. Proof-65 BN (PCGS). CAC. An old friend of our firm which we (as Stack's) first handled via private treaty sale in 1969. Nearly six decades later, it remains one of the most outstanding survivors of this issue. Iridescent antique gold, powder blue and pinkish-apricot undertones light up otherwise olive- and walnut brown surfaces as the coin rotates into direct lighting. Incredibly sharp throughout and overall frosty, with subtle reflectivity dancing across the fields. Just a single example ranks finer at PCGS in the BN category, with few stickered by CAC at any grade level. Of the approximately two dozen extant Restrike Proof 1845 half cents, this piece is among the finest known. Hairlines and carbon spots limit most examples to grades of Proof-64 and lower, leaving Gem survivors like this Proof-65 specimen highly elusive. For collectors of early American copper, half cent enthusiasts, and specialists in early U.S. Mint Proof coinage, the significance of the present offering is irrefutable. Provenance: From the Alan J. Harlan Collection. Earlier ex Philip M. Showers, 1969, privately via Stack's; Willis H. DuPont; Fred S. Werner, February 1976; Superior Stamp and Coin Co., February 1976; Joe Flynn and Son Rare Coins, April 20, 1976; R. Tettenhorst (Bernard Edison); Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society; Ira & Larry Goldberg's sale of the Missouri Cabinet, January 2014 Pre-Long Beach Auction, lot 174; Heritage's sale of the Poulos Family Collection, Part II, September 2019 Long Beach Signature Auction, lot 4591. PCGS Population: 1; 1 finer in this category (Proof-66 BN). CAC Stickered Population (both die marriage of the Restrike Proof 1845): 2; 2. PCGS# 35375. BASE PCGS# 1281. NGC ID: 26ZD.
