1839-O Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-5. Rarity-4+.

1839-O Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-5. Rarity-4+. EF-40 (PCGS). Brighter silver centers are framed at the peripheries by darker antique-silver patina on this scarce variety, which combines the obverse die previously used for GR-2 with the reverse die from GR-4. The obverse is now prominently cracked, with the principal crack beginning at approximately 11:45, extending downward through Liberty's face, and eventually reaching the drapery. An additional crack extends from the rim through star 12, continues into the hair, and joins the first crack. Two other cracks are present: one extends from star 8 through the hair and ribbon end to join the crack through star 12, while another runs from the rim through star 3 to Liberty's chin. The reverse displays the familiar thin, rounded dentils, along with a thin crack tracing the base of much of the peripheral legend, a lump beneath the eagle's right wing, and a die line in the upper corner of the shield. The strike is quite pleasing, and the coin possesses strong eye appeal for an EF example. It would serve nicely as a type coin while offering additional interest to a collector assembling the five die marriages of the 1839-O half dollar. Graham assigned GR-5 a Rarity-4+ rating in 2012, while Koenings designated it Rarity-4 in his 2024 census. Jim Koenings Commentary: My Koenings Newsletter #64 (12-15-24) ranks this die marriage as R-4 for rarity. My record of sales combined with my 2024 census indicate about 41 known specimens. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. PCGS# 6181. NGC ID: 24G7. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
